The Efficacy of Vojta¢¥s Method in Diagnosis and Treatment of Infants with Motor Disturbance

Abstract
he purpose of this study was to demonstrate the efficacy of Vojta¢¥s method in early diagnosis and treatment of infants with motor disturbance using seven postural reaction s and to find the correlation between the diagnosis of cerebral palsy and the grade of central coordination disturbance, the age at treatment initiation, brain computerized tomographic findings and electroencephalographic findings.
The subjects of this study were sixty-three infants with motor disturbance who isited the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine, Yonsei University from May, 1987 to Dec-mber, 1988. They were diagnosed and categorized according to their grade of central coordination disturbance. They were treated by Vojta¢¥s method.
The results are follows:
1) Among the cases, there were thirty-five males (55.5%) and twenty-eight f-males (44.5%). Of the four age groups, the largest group (twenty-one cases-33.3%) was the 7 -9 month age group.
2) The lower the grade of central coordination disturbance and the younger the age at treatment initiation, the greater the tendency to be normal by the time of final evaluation (P<0.05).
3) The higher the grade of central coordination disturbance and the older the age o t treatment initiation, the greater the tendency to be cerebral palsy by the time of final evaluation (P<0.05).
4) Seventeen out of twenty-three cases(73.9%) which showed abnormal findings in the brain computerized tomogram and all nine cases which showed abnormal findings in e lectroencephalogram turned out to be cerebral palsy.
5) Prematurity was the most common etiological factor in cerebral palsy, being present in 30.5% of cases. Twenty-two cases (61.0%) of the causes of cerebral palsy were natal in origin.According to the above results, Vojta¢¥s method using seven postural reactions was useful in the early diagnosis of infants with motor disturbance. Early treatment by Vojta¢¥s method seemed to correlate well with a good prognosis.
